Original wide pine flooring, moulding and fireplaces are maintained throughout the original portion. It’s a typical center hall entryway with a double parlor, both with original fireplaces. The left side is now part of the master suite with a sitting room, bedroom, walk-in closet and bath. On the right is the gracious formal living room with a large family room and small study beyond.
On the second floor of the original Cape, there is a large bedroom with en suite bathroom and a fireplace, a second bedroom with fireplace and a cozy little room tucked under the eaves, and a hall bathroom.
“As our family grew so did our home,” the owner says. “In 2007 we renovated with a new kitchen and added two bedrooms and a bathroom, preserving the 1838 historical architectural details.”
On the first floor, this involved converting the original kitchen to a dining room with a new fireplace, adding a state-of-the-art kitchen with cherry cabinets, a breakfast bar, and a sunny dining area with a wet bar in front of the box bay window overlooking the garden. A mudroom with laundry facilities leads to an outdoor shower.
A curved stairway leads to two more bedrooms with a hall bath, the perfect private area for extended family or guests.
Doors from the dining room and kitchen lead to the private back garden with seating under a wisteria covered arbor, a one-car garage and additional parking for two cars. An old garden shed has been converted into a charming private office.
“We often talked about what a grand home it must have been in its day,” said the owner. “The front porches, original front door, high ceilings, wide-plank floors and surrounding woodwork throughout have been preserved and respected all these years.”
Her family enjoys the home’s prominent location in town. “The traditional July 4th parade is the highlight of the summer since it goes by our house and is enjoyed by so many Vineyarders and tourists year after year,” she said. “In December, Christmas in Edgartown is magical. Donaroma’s Nursery has their magnificent light show, all the shops, restuarants and banks are decorated, and the lampposts down Main Street are beautifully lit up for Christmas. Saturday morning is the Christmas Parade starting in front of our house and going down Main Street.
“With three children in college and one in high school, it‘s been a perfect location for vacations, holidays, summer jobs and inviting friends to truly enjoy Edgartown.”
