Secluded Chilmark Compound
on over 63 Acres
Forty years ago the well-known architect Araldo Cossutta designed a fascinating collection of buildings for his family retreat. An early partner in the internationally known architectural firm I. M. Pei & Partners, he remained there for 17 years before founding his own firm.
Locally, his best known design is Boston’s Christian Science Center that incorporates the original church, four new buildings and the reflecting pool, a project declared an historic landmark by the City of Boston.
Known for the Brutalist architectural style that relies on raw concrete, Cossutta transformed this aesthetic to shingle style Vineyard vernacular with a modern twist. Four large round towers are joined together to create the four-bedroom main house where curves and arches echo throughout the design.
Natural materials including tile floors, wood paneling and a large brick fireplace warm the open first floor kitchen and living area while soaring ceilings with expansive glass and sliders bring the outdoors in. A bedroom, bathroom and a study complete the first floor.
Two second floor bedrooms that share a hall bath have Dutch doors that open to the living area below that can be closed for privacy. There are two open rooms and a bathroom on the third floor as well as a skywalk leading to an outdoor deck that offer’s a bird’s eye view of the property and a wonderful spot for stargazing.
Multiple outbuildings suggest many different uses. The home is approached through the center of a large barn used for storage and as a garage but it’s also been the scene of more than one party. Attached is the caretaker’s cottage consisting of a living/dining room with fireplace, kitchen, laundry, pantry and first floor bedroom and bath as well as a second floor loft.
A year-round guest cottage has a two-story wall of windows that floods the building with light. Vaulted ceilings and a two-story stone fireplace add volume to the building. On the first floor there is a living/dining room, kitchen, bedroom and full bath with a spacious bathroom on the second floor.
A small wood storage shed is next to the large pool house that contains an open sitting area, two bedrooms, a bathroom and kitchen. There is an unfinished infinity pool that will make a delightful addition to the estate. Slightly removed from the rest of the compound is the studio of the late architect-owner. There is even a small children’s playhouse in one of the trees.
Walking trails begin behind the house and wind through the woodlands. Much of that land is subject to conservation restrictions. The Vineyard’s one and only river, the Tiasquam, has one of its two beginnings as a trickle from the rear of the property. It then crosses under Tea Lane, winds back and forth under Middle Road and meanders on to West Tisbury, eventually ending at Town Cove on Tisbury Great Pond.
