Waterfront on Squibnocket Pond
Land around Squibnocket Pond served as the Chilmark Native American tribe's summer home and later acted as a shipping port before Menemsha was dredged in the early 1900s.
The original portion of the house dates from the 1700s and in 1850 it was known as the Capt. Hilliard Mayhew House. The owner was told that the front portion overlooking the pond was a fishing camp on Noman’s Island and was floated across in the late 1800s, the origin of more than one Chilmark house.
In 2017 the current owners began a major renovation, removing two non-historic additions but saving the original beams and narrow stairway in the living area, a portion of the second floor loft, the barn as well as the outhouse. The owner says, “We kept the two old buildings in their original idiosyncratic positions because that felt right to us, it optimized the views and it’s part of the historic character the community has come to value.” It’s now an easygoing home tailored for indoor-outdoor living that is restored with a respect for the past.
The traditional collection of small rooms became one open and airy living, dining and kitchen area to take advantage of the sparkling water views. They retained the second floor loft over the living room, reached by the original narrow staircase. “We very much enjoy sitting up there and looking out the windows to the ocean in the late afternoon, at sunset or on a moonlit evening,” he says. The state-of-the-art kitchen features a breakfast bar with seating and the home’s original side Dutch door, which offers the cook a view of the neighbor’s meadow and the ocean when standing at the stove.
To the right is the master bedroom with a picture window that frames the view of the bluestone terrace and the commanding ocean view. A second bedroom that could also serve as a family room has sliders to the side deck with an outdoor shower and the charming original privy, now used for storage. A rear hall leads to a guest wing with two more bedrooms in the old barn. Even when the house is bustling with family this area can be closed off from the main house for privacy. A full, finished basement almost doubles the square footage with a 30 ft. by 20 ft. recreation room, a laundry room and storage room.
A 2018 refurbishment of the beach by the town of Chilmark makes it a family destination. Known for its surfers, the location is equally welcoming to kayakers and swimmers and this property has 35 feet of pond frontage from which to launch small boats.
Designed as a carefree summer retreat, the home is just as inviting as a place to watch a dramatic autumn storm.
