Historic Secluded West Tisbury Estate on 50 Acres
This private historic estate in West Tisbury contains two restored antique homes on 50 acres of meadows and woodland with frontage on two ponds.
The principal dwelling is the Morgan Hall Homestead, an elegant five-bedroom Federal style home built in 1795 in the Berkshires that had been abandoned by the 1980s. In 1987 it was disassembled, shipped to the Vineyard, and restored on this site. Original wide pine and oak floors, fireplaces, door latches, raised paneling and intricate millwork were retained. In areas that required restoration, craftsmen copied the existing style.
The main section consists of a formal dining room and sitting room with original fireplaces and paneling and a chef’s kitchen with granite countertops. Off the kitchen, a conservatory with a wet bar has French doors leading to the pool, artist’s studio and perennial garden with walking trails to Priester’s and Crocker ponds.
Behind the kitchen, the first floor master suite has walk-in closets, a fireplace, an en suite bath that connects to the outside shower, clerestory windows and French doors to the pool. The second floor has two guest bedrooms, one with an en suite bath, a laundry room, a full and half hallway bath, and a second master suite with a fireplace and deck overlooking the pond.
A second home, a Cape Cod colonial known as the Luce-Athearn House, dates to 1714. Built by Experience Luce, a weaver, it remained in his family for three generations and was sold in 1784 to farmer Joseph Athearn. In 1797, Joseph’s son Prince became the head foreman in the construction of the frigate USS Constitution under the direction of its master builder, his neighbor from Chilmark.
During the War of 1812 Prince was a blockade-runner. After the war he moved to Indiana but the Athearn family continued to own and farm the land until the early 1900s. Until recently the road to the estate was known as Prince’s Meadow.
The five-bedroom antique Cape contains the original flooring, gunstock posts, beams and fireplaces and maintains the charm of a historic home after enjoying a thorough renovation. A state-of-the-art kitchen and dining room share an original fireplace and lead to a sitting room and an adjacent den with French doors to the patio. There are two first floor bedrooms with private baths and two second floor bedrooms that share a bathroom.
Through a connecting hallway, the home incorporates the restored barn. New exposed beams and rafters in the two-story living room with soaring fieldstone fireplace maintain the barn style. In 1946 a guest said the house was “like a museum full of marvelous antiques and old tapestry which [the owner] has collected all over the world.” During the recent renovation an elaborate chandelier was discovered under the house and reinstalled just as it was seen in an old ad when the property was for sale.
There is a private second floor master bedroom and bath. A three-season porch and patio off the living room share the main house views of meadows and gardens.
Across the driveway is a contemporary barn built in 2012 by South Mountain Company with solar panels that supply this building and the main house. The barn offers a spacious entertainment area, kitchen, half bath, greenhouse and workspace.
The houses have been skillfully and sensitively renovated in a way that respects the past while harmoniously incorporating every modern convenience. With conserved land surrounding it and two ponds at the edge of the property, this estate offers seclusion in the rural Martha’s Vineyard landscape.
